My Guru(s): None. I am self-taught. Dharma Mitra seems to be a neat guy though.

My occupation: I am a barber. I own Mulberry Street Barber Shop located in Loudon, TN.

My favorite pose: Scorpion is my favorite pose. A few years a ago, when I first started yoga, I saw a Lululemon ad with Andrea Brooke performing Vrshikasana. I had to learn that pose from that moment on. I have come a long way and can now perform it quite well.

My favorite Music: New age, celtic, folk, laid back adult pop/alternative such as: Natalie Merchant, Alanis Morrisette, Suzanne Vega; some hard rock such as: Chevelle, Megadeath, old Rush, and Led Zeppelin.

My favorite Books: Anything by John Spong, The Sivananda Companion to Yoga, and The Mystic Christ by Ethan Walker III. When I read The Mystic Christ a few years back it totally changed my way of thinking on the subjects of sin, sins, existential value, attachment, and the ego.

My favorite Movies: Kill Bill 1 and 2, Pulp Fiction, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and The Last Temptation of Christ.

My Heroes: None. The concept of hero worship is nonsense. We should look inward to discover our worth. Looking to others for it will not bring this discovery to fruition.

My Favorite City: Knoxville, TN is the only place I have lived. I, therefore, have nothing to compare it to.

My Favorite Writers: John Spong

Things that make me smile: Babies and little children

My favorite time of day: In the evening around 8:30 or so after finishing one and a half hours of yoga, when my wife and I are lying in bed, relaxing, and just watching television.

Moments in time you would like to visit, or revisit: I would like to go back to when I first got out of high school. I would enlist in the Air Force, earn a degree in mathematics while in the service, stay for twenty years, and then start a second career teaching math.

Theory on life: Our purpose in life is to achieve liberation from the ego and to assist others in doing the same. The teachings of both the Buddha and the Christ can be summed up as such.

Places I have lived: I have lived in Knoxville, TN all of my life.

Companies I love: Yogaaccessories.com, GAIAM for putting together this yoga community, VistaPrint

My Interests: Yoga, web site construction, chess, Buddhism, meditation, tattoos, guitar, introspection, contemplation of the "deeper" things in life, and observing the ego within myself and others.

My Destinations: That state of being in which one is liberated from the influence of the ego and is at peace with himself regardless of the circumstances. Some call this Nirvana.

QUOTE:

"If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the Kingdom of Heaven is in the sky', then the birds of the air will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea', then the fish will precede you. Rather, the Kingdom of Heaven is within you; and it is outside of you. When you know yourselves, you will be known; and you will understand that you are children of the Living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty; and you are the poverty."

- Jesus of Nazareth, Gospel of Thomas 3

"Do not go after the past, nor lose yourself in the future. For the past no longer exists, and the future is not yet here. By looking deeply at things just as they are, in this moment, here and now, the seeker lives calmly and freely..."

"But if there is no other world, and there is no fruit and ripening of actions well done or ill done, then here and now in this life I shall be free from hositlity, affliction, and anxiety; and I shall live happily."

- The Dhammapada

In 2004 I felt the need to engage in some type of exercise, but something new and different. I had lifted weights, jogged, and practiced martial arts several times throughout my life; and I didn't want to do any of those again. I decided to give yoga a try. I found a copy of Richard Hittleman's Introduction to Yoga at a local used book store and made up my mind to undertake yoga.

For about two years I practiced yoga off and on but was not that serious about it. I just did the asanas the best I could and gave no thought to meditation, diet, and breathing exercises. Finally in 2006, I got serious about yoga and have been going at it regularly ever since.

I am now hooked. I cannot imagine not practicing yoga. I just wouldn't feel right. I would get that "sluggish" feeling, the feeling runners say they get when they have to take a couple of days off from jogging for whatever reason.

I do not claim any mastery over the art. I suspect even the master yogis would not be so bold. I have, however, made some significant progress since 2006 and look forward to progressing more as the years go by. Hopefully, someday my spine will be as limber as the models on the cover of Yoga Journal.
